Baby First Food Questions

HI! My feedback below.

-Do you give your kids dairy? I have tried it on both. Dex didn’t tolerate it, so I wasn’t surprised Teagan doesn’t wither. #1 they both spit up or did spit up when I had it and breastfed them. But I tried dairy w/ Teagan and her but turned raw red and a day later she had an ear infection. So no more dairy. Dex has some now, but I am def not a house w/ milk on hand all the time. He will have yogurt 1x a week and cheese randomly. May have some milk here and there. Overall, it’s not a glorious food that so many people think it is. Give child a diverse and high quality diet and you are off to a better start. Also, as we know, dairy can be harmful, relating to some of the hypothesis of type 1 diabetes. Knowing the later, I am more strict on no dairy in the 16 months of life.
-Do you do raw milk like the book suggests…or just go to whole milk like most pediatricians recommend?
I’d do whole grassfed milk. I’d be open to raw too, just harder to find.
-What about almond milk or coconut milk?
Yup – this is always available for Dex. Making almond milk is so easy too.
-Have you given them yogurt? Greek yogurt? Does brand/type matter? grassfed is key
And it’s not dairy…but if you’ve given them liver…where do you buy it from? haven’t done liver. will do multiple meats, but haven’t done liver.
I get that she really doesn’t need milk at all, but I’m trying to figure out how to go from 6 bottles of formula a day to nothing at all.
She doesn’t eat very well either 🙁 We are still doing a chunkier puree. She doesn’t show a lot of interest when we put solid foods in front of her or even stick it into her mouth… aside from sweet potato chips…she always likes crunching on that, but then I get scared she’s gonna choke, so I sweep it out of her mouth quickly!!!
Her 1 yr apt isn’t for another 2 weeks…but I emailed the dr and told him my concerns with cows milk and that we were thinking of doing coconut milk. He wasn’t completely against it, but of course said “cows milk offers the best nutrition”.
I’m debating about going back and forth between coconut, hemp, and almond milk, but not sure if I should even introduce whole grassfed cows milk at all??? Maybe goats???
I guess my thought is that whatever we give her will just be to help transition her off of formula until she eats better and more solid foods. I try not to stress about it all, but of course there’s the stupid lingering of dairy = potential T1 Diabetes down the road for her. I just wanna nutritionally fill her with the best!
Any other input you have, or examples of what you’re doing with Teagan or did with Dex would be appreciated.
How did the doc appt go? Honestly, there is no need for cow’s milk. However, she should be getting some complete animal/fish protein. I use smoked salmon, flaked fish, applegate grassfed organic hotdogs to meet this, among anything I am eating, I will either chew a little myself (momma bird!!) and give her bites, or just cut such really small.
If she is still not eating much solid food – maybe she wants it served a different way. You can put things in her bottle, from smoothies to bone broth, and also look into baby led weaning. http://www.babyledweaning.com/
Teagan, my 1yo, went from taking purees to nothing, and one day I offerend very butter green beans and she pounded them. I quickly realized I was serving her the things Dex loved best, and she has a very different preference. She hates avocado, banana, b squash, etc. Ahh, can you tell she is picky?
As for choking, they need to learn to gag. Let them eat, and if they are really choking, intervene, but let them learn and help themselves.
Let me know how things are going, and I can offer more help.
Best,
Kel
