TYPE 1 DIABETES DIETITIAN NUTRITIONIST • COACH SPEAKER • AUTHOR • T1D SURVIVOR THRIVER
As the youngest of four, I was the only one with type 1 diabetes. On February 5th, 2002, in my last year of high school, my life and perspective changed forever. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 1991, but my journey took another turn on February 5th, 2002.
“Kelly, I need you to wake up. We are headed to the hospital. Your Dad has been in kidney failure and we have been waiting for a donor. Late last night we got a call and he has a match.” As we rushed to see him, I remember thinking, “Is he going to die today? And I have Type 1 Diabetes just like he does… When is this going to happen to me?”
My Dad is still here today, but it isn’t without a fight. This is why I swore that I would dedicate my career to preventing people—fathers, daughters, and everyone else in between—from going through what we had to.
Yes, I share Type 1 Diabetes with my father and with you. But amid my personal health struggle, I unearthed my purpose.
Becoming a registered dietitian enabled me to harness food as a form of healing. I’m committed to guiding people beyond conventional advice, delving into the depths of blood sugar management and addressing the core of their health needs.
Let me share a not-so-hidden truth: the world is flooded with misleading information about Type 1 Diabetes. That’s why I’m deeply fulfilled by debunking myths and unveiling the genuine potential for a fulfilling life with T1D. From my own journey starting in second grade, I’ve experienced the highs and lows of managing this condition firsthand. My aim is to illustrate the real possibilities and joys that come with living with Type 1 Diabetes. Now, my scientific yet personal perspective on blood sugar management sets me apart. I know in my soul I was meant to have T1D, so I can better help you.
As a registered dietitian specializing in T1D management, my GRACE method is holistic, going beyond dietary adjustments to help people take control of their health, not just their Type 1 Diabetes.
